Appropriating ideas from Le Corbusier's Unite d'habitation in Marseilles, Dickinson , then with Page and Steele Architects won the Massey Silver Medal in 1958 for these towers. The small demolition excavator machine removing the top 2 floors have now gone. The heavy equipment 40 Tonne demolition jaws are now making quick progress with 7am starts and 7pm finishes. Water sprays are being used to keep the dust levels down. Noise levels during the demolition have been monitored and are well below the set contract requirements. The scaffolding and shadecloth is progressively coming down as sections are demolished. Both the steel reinforcement and concrete are being sent to a recycling plant. A pile of demolition rubble allows the bigger machines to reach the upper floor levels. Multiple trucks entering and leaving the site requires careful traffic management.
